Hello everyone. New member here. My name is Joe, I live in NC and I am just getting into spoonplugging. I read the green book back in the 70s along with the home study course but never had a boat until last September so now I can start using the info to the fullest.

I learned a lot from the book and the course and used it but fishing from shore or my canoe had too many limitations. I had my canoe set up to troll and to anchor but my speed always lacked.

In the past month I have acquired a small collection of spoonplugs and have started to reread the green book. Somewhere along the way I lost the home study course.

I have made 3 attempts now using Mr Perry’s teachings. I caught fish each time. On one such trip I caught 3 blue cats bam, bam, bam when I went to the cast.

My boat isn’t a true spoonpluggers boat. It is a 2023 Xtreme Brute 1660SC with a 60 hp Suzuki and a Humminbird Helix 9 linked to a Minn Kota Terrova. The side console makes it hard for me to troll precise passes but so far it’s working out.

So that’s me. Once I figure out how to post pictures and if I can catch something post worthy I will post it up.

One more thing. My home water is Buggs Island Reservoir on the Va/NC border.

Hello Joe welcome to the spoonplugging board. I have deduced that if you read the green book back in the 70s you, like myself have a lot of age on you.
But here's the thing, if you want to be a good spoonplugger you have made it impossible to get there. Don't know why you bought such a boat. Having such a boat is ok, if you also have a spoonplugging boat, doesn't have to be expensive . Buggs island is a great lake that has lots of fish. The largemouth bass are usually 2/4 lbs. Has a good population of strippers, white bass, catfish, crappies.
Good luck.

Welcome Joe. Keep working at it. Mr. Perry knew what he was talking about.

I’m really a catfish guy so my boat choice reflects that. I started catfishing 5 years ago and got hooked on it. I never gave spoonplugging a thought when I bought my boat because I had forgot all about it until a few months ago. A lightbulb went off in my head as I was looking at a contour map trying to find some new catfish spots. I saw all this structure and knew I needed to get some spoonplugs and start learning. I just got a copy of the green book this week. I have been watching YouTube videos from Don Dickson and another channel called “Structure Fishing.” Both have reacquainted me with Mr. Perrys teaching.

I know that my boat isn’t the right fit for spoonplugging but it is doing the job so far and for catfishing it is perfect. I found out that catfish will definitely hit the spoonplugs and I am amazed that they will strike the lure trolled at 2+mph. When I am drifting bait for cats my speed is usually .3 - .5 mph. Might have to try drifting a little faster.
