Re: Last chance to ask

Joe, I have many. I suppose the highlight of my life was when John Zaborney and I went to Florida and ended up stopping at Mr. Perry's house to see if he would give us some direction. We ended up staying at their house that night and while Jeri was fixing us breakfaast, Mr. Perry left the table for ...

Was 2024 a good or bad year for catching and learning?

My own thoughts on how I look at past seasons and decisions in moving forward, all of which both the learning and catching can go hand in hand. Keeping records can show the numbers, size and specific notes can be looked at down the road for good information. In my case, my brother in law got a job ...

Re: Happy Holidays

Good job Jerry. Beautiful pics. We still have a few lakes open but a shoulder that's healing and a back that went out a week or so ago is keeping me off the water. I feel a little old and I hate it. I have to stop acting like I am 45 and think before I act. Nice to see you are on the water. John

Re: Happy Holidays

For 50 years I watch the average spoonplugger keep the boat in the garage till we get some 90 degree temps and then they come out of the closet when they can now catch their share of northern pike. Do you know how much they miss in the way of fishing knowledge on seasonal fish movements and what it ...

Re: Lake trout lake Erie Ohio waters

I agree with Jerry. I am much more focused when I am alone and get to do what I want. Not saying I don't ever want a partner because with a good partner, a lot more fish can be put in the boat. When you get my age, the motivation to run all over the country is much less then being young and would go ...

More thoughts at the end of my season

This season went so fast. It's killing me when I just took the garbage out and it's so cold and windy and as I return to the house, the lake is frozen but some may not be yet. It's depressing. Recording your catches can be a good thing to go back through at the end of the season. In a re print of ...

Thoughts

Many think that FFS is so easy. Just find a fish on the screen, cast a bait and get near the fish and they just eat it every time. Happens less than 5% or maybe less than that. One of the best uses of FFS is it lets you know what is happening very quickly. A fisherman who has good knowledge of ...

A great reel repair guy

Anything mechanical with moving parts eventually will break or need attention. I am not really tough on my reels, just use them a lot. Took me a long time to learn how to tear apart my reels, figure out what is broken and then put it back together where it still works. Most casting reels will be ...

Re: NPFL Banning FFS 2025

I would say that it took me two full years where I could say that I had gotten comfortable with my settings and was able to be pretty confident. Garmin does have a lot of settings and without help, whether it be someone else's video or just someone else who uses garmin, it just not going to come ...

Re: Something I noticed

This happens every year but its difficult for our brains to accept that changing conditions can make catching fish so bad. Within a few days of temperatures cooling off, deep single stalks of coontail weeds will start to lean. The trees have started to show some yellow or orange. Observing mother ...

Re: NPFL Banning FFS 2025

Hi Hal, We all have our opinions about those who want to ban it. Who are these people? Obviously most are ones that never spent much time doing it or those who have but like most fishermen out there, never were able to get good at it. There are lot of fishermen who are very good at it and some of ...

Re: Something I noticed

Joe, I agree. I think this cool down came a bit early but we still get the same results when it comes to change in mother nature. I cannot wait for the great fall fishing comes upon us but I don't want the season to end either. August still sounds like summer but September we know that things start ...

Re: Something I noticed

Hi Joe, When the heat of the summer is upon us and the fish are biting and all of a sudden, everyone I know starts to suck, I immediately spend a night or two fishing from about 8:30 till about 2-3 in the morning. Usually we get them pretty good and sometimes they move pretty shallow but sometimes ...

Re: Something I noticed

For the last three years, I have been a spotlight or a scoper. I have used this tool to take my understanding of what I already know and learn more with this different view. We talk about fronts and changing conditions and how it effects our catches. Look at the large area of the country these last ...

Re: Something I noticed

Ken, Have seen virtually all of our great spoonplugging lakes taken from us. Every one of them were great because they all had a dark yellow green water color and man had left them alone for many years. Once the weed sprayers got their foot in the door, it was over. Every single one of these lakes ...
